With Family Day right around the corner, we thought that it would be a good idea to look into the origins of our newest statutory holiday in Ontario.

Family Day is observed in Canada on different days depending on where you live. In the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, it falls on the third Monday in February (although it also goes by other names – Louis Riel Day, Nova Scotia Heritage Day and Islander Day. In British Columbia, Family Day falls on the second Monday in February – starting in 2013.

Specifically in Ontario, the Liberal Party established the holiday on October 12th, 2007 to be first observed on February 18th, 2008. The creation of this new statutory holiday raised Ontario’s total number of holidays to nine each year.
