Moving during the winter months can save you quite a bit on costs but there is always the risk that snow and wintry conditions can lead to delays on move day. Here are a few simple tips for moving during this time of year.
Make sure that your driveway and all walkways are shovelled and clear of snow and debris. If this is not done, there will be guaranteed delays while the movers either shovel it for you or wait for you to complete this while you are on the clock and paying for their time. Obstacles and snow can cause a very hazardous work environment for your moving crew and is a sure fire way for you to pay more for the service. Always practice safe shoveling - Look for a shovel with a bent shape that extends toward the ground so you don't have to bend your back as much. Try to use your knees as leverage and keep your back as straight as possible.
Salt all walkways and driveways at least 30 minutes prior or even longer if the ice is thick. It is also important to note that on very cold days, opt for the Magnesium Chloride ice melter as opposed to the traditional salt as this only works for temperatures above -8 celcius. Salt frequently enough to be sure that everything is safe for your movers’ scheduled arrival time.
Movers are unable to remove their boots during a move as this represents a safety issue. Ensure that they lay down floor runners to protect your flooring at both pickup and delivery and limit the mess on snowy days.
1. When should I move In order to get the best price?
This is a question that we get asked every single day! Sadly, there is no simple answer. However, we always recommend that you contact your moving company well in advance to discuss the best and cheapest dates. As a general rule of thumb, attempt to stay away from busy month endings and if possible try to move in the winter season when the moving industry is at its slowest.
2. Which moving company should I use?
The best thing to do is find a friend or family member who can give you a first hand account of a personal referral based on their experience. If you can’t do that, try referring to online review sites such as Homestars (a very popular review website in the GTA). Yelp is popular as well. I always suggest that you check to ensure your company has an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau.
3. How early should I begin looking for moving estimate?
The more advanced notice you can provide to your moving company, the better. We have found that 4-6 weeks is best. If you require an on site estimate, it may take 1-2 weeks to receive the most accurate estimate possible. You also may end up reaching out to more than one company. Once you are ready to move forward with a company, you should let them know as soon as possible and confirm your packing, moving and delivery dates. By not confirming well enough in advance, your top choice moving company may be sold out!
